Gustav Hessing 1909-1981

 

Gustav Hessing was born 1909 in Czernowitz (then Habsburg Monarchy/today Ukraine). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the classes of Ferdinand Andri and Karl Fahringer. In the Nazi Regime he was banned from his profession by the Nazis. In 1946 he was a cofounder and the first president of the artists accosiation "Der Kreis" (the circle). In 1957 Hessing became professor and leader of an own class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Between 1958 and 1960 and from 1969 on he was a member of the Viennese Secession. Hessing received the Prize of the City Vienna for fine Art in 1967. In 1979 a great exhibition on his artwork took place at the renowned Viennese Belvedere Museum. Gustav Hessing died in 1981 in Vienna.
